Future of Medicine Brings Tucson’s Medical Community Together

The Future of Medicine is Now

On September 24, the Pima County Medical Society, in partnership with El Rio Health, welcomed physicians, medical students, residents, fellows and community partners to the Manning House for the Future of Medicine Reception.

The evening was created to encourage connection, mentorship and candid conversation across different stages of a career in medicine. Attendees had the opportunity to meet local physicians, ask questions, exchange experiences and discuss the opportunities and challenges shaping healthcare in Southern Arizona.

Following opening remarks from PCMS leadership and Dr. Michael DeLong, representatives from Bank of America shared information about the financial side of a physician’s career. Their presentation explored topics including financial planning, private practice ownership, practice financing and other important professional milestones.

Guests then participated in interactive discussion tables focused on six areas:

Advocacy and Civic Engagement
The Business of Medicine
Civil Service and Public Health
Community Engagement
Physician Wellness and Burnout Prevention
Specialty Exploration

Rather than following a traditional panel format, attendees were encouraged to move among the tables, join the conversations most relevant to them and connect directly with physicians and community leaders. This created space for thoughtful questions, practical guidance and new relationships to form throughout the evening.

The Future of Medicine Reception was an important moment for PCMS and reflected the strength of Tucson’s medical community. The conversations that took place demonstrated how much physicians and future physicians can learn from one another when given the opportunity to connect across specialties, organizations and career stages.

PCMS is grateful to Bank of America, El Rio Health, the Arizona Medical Association, our participating physicians and everyone who contributed their time and expertise. We are especially thankful to the students, residents and fellows who arrived ready to ask questions and take an active role in shaping the future of medicine.

This event was only the beginning. PCMS looks forward to building on this momentum through future educational programs, mentorship opportunities and events that bring Tucson’s medical community together.

The Pima County Medical Society invites medical students, residents, fellows, and practicing physicians from across Southern Arizona to join us for The Future of Medicine , an evening centered on connection, mentorship, and conversations about the opportunities and challenges shaping a career in medicine.

Medicine is more than a profession. It’s a community. This reception is an opportunity to bring different generations of that community together, creating space for emerging physicians to connect directly with established physician leaders and local organizations that can support them throughout their careers.

Whether you are just beginning medical school, preparing for the next stage of training, or have been practicing for years, we hope you’ll join the conversation.

What to Expect

This is not a traditional lecture or conference.

Following opening remarks and a brief presentation from our main sponsor, Bank of America , attendees will have the opportunity to participate in small-group discussions led by physicians and community leaders.

The evening will also include time to visit community resource tables, meet other members of Southern Arizona’s medical community, ask questions, and build new professional connections.

The heart of the evening will be a series of rotating small-group discussions designed to give attendees the opportunity to explore multiple topics throughout the night.

Business of Medicine & Financial Literacy

A career in medicine comes with important financial and business decisions that often extend beyond clinical training. This table will provide an opportunity to discuss the business side of medicine, financial literacy, and considerations physicians may encounter throughout different stages of their careers.

Specialty Exploration

Choosing a specialty is one of the most significant decisions in a physician’s career. Connect with practicing physicians, ask questions about different career paths, and hear perspectives that can help you better understand where your own interests may lead.

Community Engagement

Physicians have an important role within the communities they serve. Explore ways to become involved beyond the clinical setting, build meaningful local connections, and make an impact throughout Southern Arizona.

Civic Health

Health and civic participation are closely connected. This discussion will explore civic health, the physician’s role in supporting healthy communities, and opportunities for nonpartisan civic engagement within healthcare.

Public Health & Civil Service

Explore how medicine intersects with public health and public service. Physicians working in these spaces will share perspectives on serving communities at the population level and the different ways medical expertise can contribute to public health.

Physician Wellness & Burnout Prevention

Building a sustainable career in medicine requires caring for the physician as well as the patient. This conversation will focus on physician wellness, burnout prevention, resilience, and resources that can support physicians throughout training and practice.

The Pima County Medical Society is bringing together the next generation of physicians and the physicians already practicing and leading in Southern Arizona for our inaugural Future of Medicine Reception on September 24.

Designed for medical students, residents, fellows, and practicing physicians , the evening will create an opportunity to step outside of the classroom and clinical setting to build connections, ask questions, exchange perspectives, and have meaningful conversations about what it means to build a career in medicine today.

More Than a Networking Event

The Future of Medicine is designed to strengthen Southern Arizona's physician community by creating connections across different stages of a medical career.

Throughout the evening, attendees will have the opportunity to meet local physicians and community leaders through interactive discussion tables focused on topics that play an important role in a physician's professional life but may not always be covered in traditional medical training.

The Pima County Medical Society will host its upcoming PCMS Membership Meeting on Thursday, February 5 , bringing members together for an evening of connection, updates, and discussion about the Society’s direction moving forward.

This meeting will provide members with an opportunity to hear updates from PCMS leadership, including current initiatives, plans for 2026, and ongoing efforts to strengthen advocacy, engagement, and professional connection for physicians practicing in Pima County. Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions and share feedback as PCMS continues its work during this period of growth and transition.

As PCMS looks ahead, leadership is actively exploring expanded committee opportunities, continued local advocacy efforts, and new ways for members to become more involved with the Society. Member participation and input remain essential as PCMS works to ensure it continues to reflect the needs and priorities of the local medical community.

Additional details regarding the meeting agenda and logistics will be shared with members in advance. PCMS encourages all members to attend and take part in shaping the future of the Society.
